Soprano Sarah Payne, a native of South Florida, is quickly becoming recognized as a "young, lustrous soprano that demands attention.”
During the 2019/2020 season, Ms. Payne will be performing as Mimì in Mannes Opera's production of La Bohème. In her previous season, she covered the role of Lady Billows in Britten's Albert Herring with Utopia Opera.
From 2015-2017, Ms. Payne was a part of the Studio Artist Program of Florida Grand Opera. During her residency, Ms. Payne covered the roles of Micäela in Bizet’s Carmen, Tatyana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, The Moon/Mother in Jorge Martín's Before Night Falls, Amelia in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and Marta from Weinberg's The Passenger. She also portrayed the role of Clotilde in Bellini's Norma while covering the title role of Norma.
During the summer of 2016, Ms. Payne reprised the role of the Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. Her performance was raved to have been “loving, sensual, and frightened, dressing the character in the proper sonorous attire. Brilliant from beginning to end.”
Ms. Payne won First Place in the 2015 St. Petersburg Opera Guild Voice Competition, was a Regional Finalist for the 2014/15 Metropolitan Opera National Council and was a Semi-Finalist for the 2015 Young Patronesses of the Opera Voice Competition.
Ms. Payne also performed the role of Contessa Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with the Miami Music Festival. She then spent some time in Salzburg, Austria studying with renowned American Soprano, Helen Donath at the Mozarteum University. During her time in Salzburg, Ms. Payne was named a Finalist in the International Richard Strauss Competition.
Ms. Payne has also performed: The First Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, with the 2013 Music Academy International; Anna Maurrant in Weil’s Street Scene, Poppea in Handel’s Agrippina, as part of Florida International University’s Opera Theater.
Ms. Payne has a Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Mannes School of Music, and a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance from Florida International University.
